Tingling in the head: what can it be?

Expert answer:

Tingling in the head can be a sign of hyperparathyroidism, migraine with aura or even more serious problems such as heart attack and AVC (leakage).

Tingling is usually caused by compression of a nerve or lack of blood, but the causes vary, so it is important to be aware of other symptoms as well.

At the hyperparathyroidism (over functioning of the parathyroid glands), in addition to tingling in the head and other parts of the body, the person can also present:

  • Muscle weakness;
  • Lack of appetite;
  • Tiredness;
  • Weight loss;
  • Constipation;
  • Abdominal pain;
  • Nausea;
  • Vomiting.

THE migraine with aura it is characterized by headache, visual, auditory, sensory or motor disturbances. Among them are:

  • Tingling in the head, mouth, tongue and limbs;
  • Difficulty speaking;
  • Dizziness;
  • Blurred vision.

If tingling in the head is accompanied by tingling in the face, arm or leg only on one side of the body, it may be a sign of "leakage"(Stroke) and the person should go to the hospital immediately.

When tingling runs into the arm, especially the left, and is followed by symptoms such as chest or neck pain, arm pain (usually left), shortness of breath, sweating, and nausea, it may be the beginning of a heart attack and the person should seek an emergency room as soon as possible.

If the tingling in the head persists, it is best to seek the general practitioner, family doctor or neurologist.
