THE hand-foot-mouth syndrome is an infection that causes sores in the mouth, hands, feet, buttocks and sometimes in the genital area. This syndrome is caused by enterovirus-type viruses, especially the Coxsackie virus.

THE streaming occurs through via fecal-oral through direct contact with secretions (feces and saliva) or contaminated objects. The syndrome is more common in children younger than 5 years.

In general, the syndrome is self-limiting and lasts for 2 to 3 days.

The main symptoms are:

  • Wounds that can appear in the mouth, hands, feet, buttocks and sometimes in the genital region and can be characterized as small blisters or vesicles that ulcerate;
  • Pain when swallowing or refusing to eat if child is small;
  • Increased salivation;
  • Pain in the affected areas;
  • Fever;
  • Abdominal pain;
  • Diarrhea;
  • Vomiting.
