Gynecomastia and the benign proliferation of the mammary gland in men. This breast growth can cause discomfort and increased sensitivity on the nipples. This situation may occur in the childhood, at adolescence or adulthood. The causes can be varied from puberty, drug use and unknown causes.
Gynecomastia of adolescence, caused by hormonal changes, usually resolve itself, without the need for specific treatment.
In other cases, the medication use Tamoxifen®, an estrogen inhibitor, can be used for a period of time.
Men who have gynecomastia for more than one year usually do not benefit from such drug therapy and surgery may be indicated to reduce breast size if this is a nuisance associated with pain and tenderness.
