What is the difference between acute sinusitis and chronic sinusitis?

Expert answer:

The difference between acute sinusitis and chronic sinusitis is in the duration of symptoms. In the case of acute sinusitis, they last at most 4 weeks. When symptoms of sinusitis persist for more than 12 weeks consecutive, even with treatment, it is classified as chronic sinusitis.

Symptoms of acute and chronic sinusitis may include facial pain, a feeling of heaviness in the face, headache, nasal congestion with secretion, decreased smell, coughing (usually worsens at night), sneezing, swelling and pain around the eyes, ear clogged and bad breath.

THE acute sinusitis usually does not need a specific treatment, as it usually resolves spontaneously in about 10 days.

Already the chronic sinusitis for months or years and needs treatment. Depending on the cause the treatment may include the use of nasal sprays with antiallergics and corticosteroids, antifungals, antibiotics, antiallergic vaccine, environmental hygiene measures and surgery.

The complete and definitive cure of chronic sinusitis is more difficult to achieve, although it is possible. However, there are cases where treatment can only serve to alleviate the symptoms and keep the disease under control.

The diagnosis and treatment of sinusitis is the responsibility of the otorhinolaryngologist.
