THE high prolactin or hyperprolactinemia is the increase of the hormone prolactin in the blood that can have various causes and with different effects on men and women.

The increase in prolactin production occurs mainly during breast-feeding, but may also be caused by stress and some pathological factors as prolactinoma (benign tumor), disturbances in the pituitary or hypothalamus, hypothyroidism, use of medication and chronic renal failure.

High prolactin can result in: menstrual disorders, infertility, hypogonadism, erectile dysfunction and galactorreia (milk flow through the breasts).

At medications which may raise prolactin are: antipsychotics (risperidone, chlorpromazine, haloperidol), antidepressants (clomipramine, amitriptyline), antihypertensives (methyldopa, reserpine, verapamil), antiemetics (domperidone, metoclopramide), analgesics opioids (such as morphine).

O treatment depending on the cause that caused the hormone increase and may range from the use of a specific medication to reduce prolactin production, radiotherapy to the surgery for removal of the tumor.
