The main risks of uterine cerclage are the occurrence of infections it's the membrane rupture of the amniotic sac that surrounds the baby, which could lead to an abortion. Other possible complications of cerclage include increased uterine activity, irritability of the uterus, dislocation of the suture, and healing of the uterine cervix.
There is also the risk of cerclage not being able to avoid dilation of the cervix and preventing miscarriage or one premature birth. However, in this case, the risk is not associated with the procedure itself, but with the success of the treatment.
Studies indicate that cerclage does not bring benefits or advantages in cases of low-risk pregnancies.
Uterine cerclage is indicated for women with cervical isthmus incompetence, a condition in which the cervix can not bear the weight of the gestation and dilates prematurely, causing a miscarriage or a premature birth. Cervical isthmus incompetence is determined by the occurrence of 3 or more consecutive miscarriages.
Some women are able to work after the cerclage, while others resting and can not have sex until the end of pregnancy. A vaginal hormone is also prescribed to prevent further dilation of the cervix.
