Expert answer:
The cerebral aneurysms may cause severe or no sequelae, depending on the size, location, and extent of bleeding if rupture occurs.
A recent Brazilian study showed that a little more than half of the patients who suffered subarachnoid hemorrhage (due to aneurysm rupture) had sequelae, among them:
- death
- cognitive alterations: difficulty of attention, perception, memory, reasoning, judgment, imagination, thought and / or language (difficulty to speak and understand);
- motor deficits: difficulty in moving a limb or the complete half of the body;
- behavioral changes: depression, anxiety, difficulty in relating, aggression;
- diplopia: double vision;
- dizziness;
- blindness;
- difficulty in controlling the elimination of urine and faeces;
- difficulty swallowing and coughing.
It is important to emphasize that the early institution of rehabilitation therapies, such as speech therapy, physiotherapy, psychology and occupational therapy, can promote a satisfactory recovery. The patient should be followed by the neurologist and all those other professionals to overcome the sequelae.
