When there is bleeding in the ear a careful external cleaning of the blood in the ear should be done. If the person with bleeding is lying down, you should keep your ear positioned down and seek medical attention.

Bleeding in the ear is usually due to an injury to the ear canal or the eardrum (tympanic membrane). Usually, bleeding is accompanied by other symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, vomiting, headache, tinnitus, and hearing loss.

The most common causes of bleeding in the ears are: injury due to use of a sharp object such as a cotton swab or a clamp, infection, tumors, severe ear injury, skull fracture, very large variations in atmospheric pressure that can occur on flights and dives and explosions.

In these situations, a general practitioner or otorhinolaryngologist should be sought for a correct evaluation of the problem.
