No, H. pylori positive is not a sign of stomach cancer, but a risk factor to develop the disease. It is not yet known why the presence of this bacterium contributes to the onset of stomach cancer, but it is believed that H. pylori chronic inflammation in the stomach which increases the predisposition for the development of the disease.

However, the Helicobacter pylori is not by itself the cause of stomach cancer. There are other risk factors that should also be considered, such as family history of cancer, eating habits, environmental factors, among others. The set of predisposing factors is that they may favor the appearance of the tumor.

In addition to stomach cancer, H. pylori is associated with other gastric diseases such as ulcers and gastrites. However, it is important to remember that the bacterium lives in the stomach of more than half of the population without causing any type of symptom. Among H. pylori carriers, only 1.5% of them, on average, will develop cancer.
