Is leprosy a cure? Can you come back after treatment?

Expert answer:

Leprosy has a cure. O treatment is made available free Health System (SUS) and it is fundamental to to heal the sick, avoid transmission of disease and control endemism contributing to the elimination of leprosy.

After the diagnosis of the disease and the classification according to the type, the person with leprosy starts the treatment with specific drugs taken daily and monthly with the supervision of the health team. Depending on the type of leprosy, the treatment can last between 6 to 12 months.

THE leprosy may return after treatment, especially in cases where the medication was not taken correctly for the time needed. In these cases of relapse (return of disease), the person should be re-examined and a new treatment is initiated.

Because it is a disease with prolonged treatment, many people give up treatment along the way and do not complete until the end. This causes the disease not to be cured properly, which is detected with the presence of physical disabilities.

In the presence of some of the symptoms mentioned in What is Hansen's disease and what are the symptoms ?, look for a Health Unit of the SUS for an appropriate consultation and evaluation. And, if the leprosy diagnosis is confirmed, start treatment as soon as possible and complete it until the end.
