I was hit in the eye and I was left with a blood stain. What can it be and what to do?

Expert answer:

This blood spot from the blow to the eye is a little bleeding resulting from rupture of any blood vessel. Depending on the mechanism and intensity of the trauma, this lesion may be superficial or internal, which is usually more severe.

If the eye injury for superficial, the vision may be partially or completely blocked. Complications such as increased intraocular pressure and blood staining in the cornea, which can also interfere with visual ability.

Already a Inner eye injury may cause blood stain on the cornea and consequently reduce vision, as occurs in cataract, or increase the risk of glaucoma until the end of life.

In addition, in an internal injury, blood may leak into the eye and damage the iris (colored part of the eye) or move the lens.

It can also occur haemorrhage and retinal detachment which, at first, gives the impression of images with irregular shapes or flashes of light, besides leaving the vision blurred; then there is a significant decrease in visual ability.

What to do if you take a pancake in your eye and get a blood stain?

The first thing to do is apply a cold compress to the eye for 10 minutes to control pain and bleeding. Then look for the doctor / ophthalmologist to verify the size of bleeding and the level of intraocular pressure.

In addition, it is also recommended:

  • Avoid doing physical exercises;
  • Do not scratch, or sleep on the affected eye;
  • Increase fluid intake;
  • Keep posture high in bed;
  • Constantly monitor the structure of the eye.

The treatment is based on rest and anti-inflammatory medications. If there is difficulty in controlling intraocular pressure or if the cornea becomes impregnated with blood, it may be necessary to surgery.

If the treatment is followed correctly, the blow to the eye will not leave severe sequelae.
The blood stain is usually reabsorbed by the body after 15 to 30 days.
