What can cause hearing loss?

Expert answer:

The main causes of hearing loss include otitis, tumors, excess wax, labyrinthitis, problems with the nerves or bones of the ear that pick up and transmit sounds, viral infections, excessive noise, use of certain medicines, old age, inflammation of the eardrum and perforations of the eardrum, which can be caused by traumas, sudden changes in atmospheric pressure, among other situations.

Hearing loss can occur when there is some difficulty in ear canal or when there is deterioration of nerve cells which transmit the sound signals to the brain, located in the inner ear. In some cases, hearing impairment can have both causes.

Hearing impairment is the partial or total loss of hearing. THE deafness may be mild, moderate, severe or profound.

The signals and symptons of hearing loss may include ringing in the ear, talking too loud, or always asking others to speak louder or repeat what they just said.

The treatment of hearing loss depends on your place of origin. If it is in the middle or outer ear, deafness can be treated by surgery or other clinical procedures. When hearing loss affects the inner ear, deafness is hardly reversed, requiring the use of a prosthesis.

Diagnosis and treatment of hearing loss is the responsibility of the otorhinolaryngologist.
