What are the causes and symptoms of bruxism?

Expert answer:

It is not possible to say with absolute certainty what the causes of bruxism are. However, some experts claim that bruxism can be caused by situations of anxiety or stress, genetic factors or problems that prevent proper closure of the mouth.

Headache is one of the most common symptoms, besides the corrosion and weakening of the teeth. The high compression in the teeth can cause ischemia of the vessels in the root of the teeth, and may also cause necrosis not only of these vessels, but also of the dental pulp and nerves.

There are other symptoms of bruxism, for example: pain in the jaws, neck, muscles of the face (caused by exertion of muscles responsible for chewing), tinnitus and earache, and changes in the normal sleep pattern.
