What causes and symptoms of hyperglycemia?

Expert answer:

THE hyperglycemia occurs more commonly in patients with Diabetes type 1 and 2, or due to insufficient drug treatment for the medication or the disease itself.

Others causes include:

  • Diabetes mellitus primary, secondary or other pathologies, such as, for example, flu or infections in general;
  • Abuse of food;
  • Lack of physical exercise;
  • Metabolic syndrome.

Symptoms of hyperglycemia:

  • Mouth and dry skin;
  • Polydipsia (excessive thirst);
  • Polyuria (excess of urine);
  • Very hungry, accompanied by weight loss;
  • Tiredness;
  • Headache, usually with associated nausea and vomiting;
  • Nipple;
  • Somnolence;
  • Difficulty breathing;
  • Ketone breath (due to the formation of ketone bodies by the body).

If hyperglycemia is suspected, a physician (preferably an endocrinologist) should be consulted. He will be able to evaluate in detail, through anamnesis, physical examination and eventual complementary tests, what his correct diagnosis is, guide him and prescribe the best treatment, case by case.
