What are the symptoms of hepatitis A?

Expert answer:

Usually hepatitis A does not manifest symptoms, especially in children. In adults, it may go unnoticed as a mild cold. When present, the symptoms of hepatitis A are:

  • Nausea and / or vomiting;
  • Fever;
  • Dizziness;
  • Abdominal pain;
  • Lack of appetite;
  • Tiredness;
  • Itchy skin;
  • Diarrhea, with light stools;
  • Dark urine;
  • Jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes).

Hepatitis A is a self-limiting disease of a benign nature in which the person recovers at home without needing hospitalization. Less than 1% of cases can progress to fulminant hepatitis, except for older people over 65 years of age who are more likely to develop more severe forms of the disease.

Individuals who have had hepatitis A become immune to this type of condition but remain susceptible to other forms of hepatitis.
