The symptoms of breast cancer are listed below. However, it is important to note that, although these symptoms are considered as do not necessarily indicate the existence of cancer, and may be due to benign diseases.
- nodules or thickening in the areas of the breasts and / or armpits;
- change in breast size and shape;
- appearance of retractions in the skin and areola and / or nipple;
- bulging or changes in the appearance of the skin;
- secretions through the spontaneous exit nipple.
Although breast pain is a frequent symptom, it is rarely related to cancer, but to hormonal action in the mammary parenchyma or less frequently as a result of extra breast causes such as: orthopedic, muscular, neurological, endocrine or inflammatory changes.
The only method that allows the early diagnosis of breast cancer is the mammogram. Through this method, it is possible to identify mammary tumors even before they are clinically detectable.
Although mammography is the best method to detect the disease early, it may not show a cancer, especially if the breasts are dense, or it may show suspicious areas that may not correspond to the cancer.
In these cases, for a more accurate diagnosis, other tests, such as ultrasonography, magnetic resonance and percutaneous puncture, which increase the diagnostic chances.
Confirmation of the diagnosis will be achieved through percutaneous puncture with thin or thick needles (mamotomy or core biopsy), in cases of microcalcifications, subclinical and palpable nodules, or surgical biopsies.
The diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer should be guided by the gynecologist or mastologist.
