Fecal blood in pregnancy

Expert answer:

During pregnancy, blood may be present in the stool due to intestinal changes in the stool that cause difficulty in evacuation (constipation), causing stool dryness and effort to evacuate. Because of this, hemorrhoids and lesions in the anus (anal fissures) are common and may bleed during bowel movements.

To ease bowel constipation it is important to drink lots of fluids and maintain a varied diet with fruits, vegetables and fiber. Regular physical activity, such as walking, can also help improve bowel movement.

However, other disorders of the digestive system (mouth, esophagus, stomach, intestines, rectum and anus) can cause bleeding, making the stool dark or with bright red blood. If there is suspicion of blood in the stool it is important to consult the doctor.
