Blood in the stool, what can it be?

Expert answer:

The presence of blood in stool can have many causes. When the blood in the stool has a bright red color indicates that the bleeding occurred in the lower regions of the digestive system (large intestine, rectum and anus). This type of bleeding can be caused by hemorrhoids, anal fissures, lesions caused by some type of trauma in these regions, worms, polyps, diverticuloses, inflammatory bowel diseases (Crohn's and ulcerative colitis) and tumors.

When this bleeding occurs in the mouth, esophagus, stomach or duodenum (upper part of the small intestine), the stools tend to have a very dark coloration and a characteristic strong smell (melena), especially after more intense bleeding. Among the causes for these bleeds are traumatic lesions, ulcers, esophagitis, esophageal varices, polyps and tumors

The gastroenterologist or the proctologist are the specialists who diagnose and treat the problems of the digestive system, as in case of blood in the stool.
