I feel stitches in my chest. What can it be?

Expert answer:

Sprains in the chest are usually not related to the heart. They can be a sign of intestinal gas, anxiety, lung and digestive diseases, among other causes. The chest pain caused by the infarct has different characteristics.

Chest pangs can be caused by irritation of the pleura, a double membrane of connective tissue that covers the lungs and the inner part of the thorax.

Pleuritic pain is sudden, stabbing, and appears or worsens with breath, cough or yawn. The stitches are well located and seem to come directly from the heart.

Among the diseases or conditions that can affect the pleura and cause chest pain are tuberculosis, lung cancer, pneumonia, pleural effusion (excess fluid between the lung and the ribs) and pneumothorax (air leakage or air inlet in the pleural space that causes a total or partial collapse of the lung).

When chest pain is a symptom of heart attack, the person usually feels a pain or discomfort in the chest that can radiate to the jaw and the left arm. It is an intense and prolonged pain, accompanied by a feeling of weight or tightness in the chest.
