After consuming alcohol, how long does it take to download the GT-Gama?

Expert answer:

After consuming alcoholic beverage, the Gamma-GT normally it takes between 15 and 20 days to lower to normal levels, and may rise again in a short time if the person returns to ingest alcohol.

It is recommended to stay, at least, 72 hours without alcoholic beverages before taking the Gamma-GT exam.

Gamma-GT is an enzyme that is present in various tissues and organs of the body, including kidneys, brain, pancreas and especially liver.

Because of the characteristic localization of liver cells that produce gamma-GT, the enzyme appears to be elevated in almost all disorders related to liver and bile, and is therefore one of the most sensitive tests to diagnose such conditions, in addition to liver damage caused for drugs and alcohol.

Individuals who use chronic alcoholic beverages have an increase in gamma-GT, although only 30 to 50% of alcoholics have this high enzyme. The high value of the enzyme may indicate use of alcoholic beverage, but not necessarily liver disease.

In chronic alcoholism, Gama-GT levels decrease with alcohol withdrawal and increase with the return of consumption. Based on this, the dosage of Gamma-GT along with other liver enzymes can be used in some alcohol treatment centers to accompany the therapy.
