Proteinuria: what are the reference values?

Expert answer:

THE proteinuria is the evaluation of the amount of protein present in the urine. This test is usually done with urine collected within 24 hours and should not be larger than 150 mg / day.

A higher value may indicate impaired renal function, which is aggravated in the presence of some diseases such as diabetes and hypertension.

In pregnant women, as there is an excess of protein excretion, the reference value is up to 300mg / 24 hours.

Other tests may be required to supplement the evaluation such as the microalbuminuria test and blood test (creatinine).

All examination results must be interpreted by the physician who requested to correlate with the clinical symptoms and personal history of each patient.
