My breasts have been swollen, sore, and hard for a month. What can it be?

My breasts have been swollen, sore, and hard for a month. My period usually came, but they do not stop hurting. I can no longer sleep with my belly down because it hurts my breasts and my belly too. What can it be?
Expert answer:

Swollen, hard, and tender breasts usually may be due to hormonal changes which occur during the menstrual cycle.

The breasts tend to become more sore, hard and swollen in the days before menstruation, in the period premenstrual syndrome.

The use of hormonal contraceptives may also cause swelling and pain in the breasts, being a frequent cause of this condition.

When the pain is intense and prolonged, as in your case that is lasting more than 1 month, it is advised to seek the gynecologist, family doctor or general practitioner for an evaluation.
