Sinusitis is the inflammation of the mucosa covering the paranasal sinuses, which are bony cavities located around the nose and behind the apple of the face, forehead and eyes.
Sinusitis can be caused by viruses, bacteria, fungi, allergies or irritative processes, being divided into 2 types:
- Acute sinusitis: It is a recent inflammation of the paranasal sinuses, usually a complication of a cold;
- Chronic Sinusitis: Inflammation of the breasts of the face that lasts for months or years.
Here are the symptoms of sinusitis.
What causes sinusitis?
- Infections caused by bacteria, viruses or fungi;
- Gripes and colds;
- Respiratory allergy;
- Deviation of nasal septum;
- Rhinitis, asthma, bronchitis, tonsillitis and pharyngitis.
Within the paranasal sinuses is produced mucus, which is drained to the nose through small tunnels.
When these tunnels obstructed by secretion, swelling of the mucosa or any other cause, the breasts of the face lose communication with the nose, being sealed and without ventilation.
Thus, the mucus produced by the mucosa accumulates, which facilitates the proliferation of bacteria, giving rise to sinusitis.
The most common causes of sinusitis are disorders that cause swelling of the mucosa, such as allergic rhinitis and respiratory infections caused by viruses, since the swelling prevents the mucus from draining normally to the nose.

O Deviated septum or other obstruction of the nose can also disrupt the passage of mucus, leaving it trapped in a paranasal sinus.
Swimming or dipping your head in the water may allow the entry of water and bacteria to the sinuses, causing irritation and infection, leading to sinusitis.
Even dental infections can spread through the sinuses and infect them directly, causing sinusitis.
