This antigen is a protein present in fetal or embryonic tissue and usually disappears after birth, however, some amount may be present in the colon.

In general, it serves to monitor the treatment of cancer, in particular, colon cancer. O CEA it is a tumor marker which may be high in others types of cancer such as breast, ovarian, thyroid, pancreas and lung and in other situations as in inflammations, pancreatitis, lung infections, smokers, liver cirrhosis, etc.
