Molluscum contagiosum: what is the treatment?

Expert answer:

The treatment of molluscum contagiosum is done through the withdrawal or undoing surgical of the lesions. The most commonly used techniques are cauterization, cryosurgery (cold destruction), electrosurgery and curettage (scraping). In many cases, the lesions are removed manually.

Children with contagious molluscum can be treated with ointments, because it is a less aggressive treatment that can be done at home. However, the ointment may cause adverse reactions such as redness around the lesions, itching, and peeling of the skin.

People with a healthy immune system generally do not need treatment. In these cases, contagious mollusc usually disappears spontaneously after a period of time that can last for months or years. Even so, it is recommended to treat the infection in all situations.

The remedies used to treat warts can be used to remove larger lesions. However, very small lesions can be treated with the use of ointments or creams (imiquimode).

At home, it is important to take care, such as avoiding scratching, squeezing or touching the lesions, as well as covering them with clothing or gauze. The dressing should be changed daily.

The diagnosis and treatment of molluscum contagiosum is the responsibility of the dermatologist.
