The high monocytes, a condition called monocytosis, can be caused by, among several other reasons:

  • Recovery of acute infections;
  • Chronic infections;
  • Inflammatory Bowel Disease;
  • Cancer;
  • Inflammatory processes (such as systemic lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis);
  • Use of some medications;
  • After removal of the spleen;
  • Chemotherapy.

O monocyte it's a kind of white blood cell, defense cell which plays an important role in fighting fungi, viruses and bacteria, as well as participating in inflammatory processes.

Increasing monocytes alone is not a common situation. In these cases, medical follow-up is recommended for a detailed evaluation and, incidentally, repetition of the examination.
