What is discoid lupus and what are the symptoms?

Expert answer:

Discoid lupus erythematosus is a inflammatory disease chronic disease that affectsskin. Lupus is an autoimmune disease, which means that the body produces antibodies that attack the body itself. Its cause is unknown, but it is known that it is related to genetic factors, being more common in women.

The symptoms of discoid lupus are characterized by rounded and reddish spots on the skin, with well-defined edges. Pimple-like lesions and red plaques can appear that look very rough on the skin.

The lesions usually evolve with redness and pigmentation at the edges. The center tends to become lighter, like an atrophied scar. In a later stage of discoid lupus, these lesions may fuse and form extensive areas of scar in the skin.

The sites most affected by discoid lupus are the face, scalp, ears, thorax, and exposed parts of the arms. Lesions may also occur in the mucosa of the mouth, nose, eyes and genital organ.

Discoid lupus is the most common form of cutaneous lupus erythematosus. The disease usually does not affect internal organs and is restricted to the skin. However, over time, there may be internal organ involvement and systemic lupus erythematosus in some cases.
