Vaginal ointments and creams serve to treat various types of vaginal infections, most often caused by fungi or bacteria. They are, therefore, antibiotics or antifungals that should only be used with medical prescription.
The most commonly used vaginal ointments are: nystatin, nitrate of miconazole, and metronidazole , but other presentations are available and are useful for different treatments.
Vaginal infections can manifest with various symptoms, each type of infection has its characteristic, and are usually characterized by vaginal discharge, itching, redness, swelling, pain in intercourse, etc. The most common are: candidiasis, vaginosis, sexually transmitted diseases such as trichomoniasis, gonorrhea, chlamydia, etc.
Treatment with vaginal ointment should be done to the end and should not be discontinued, even with relief of symptoms or during menstruation. The prescription must be made by the gynecologist or family doctor.
