What is the treatment for erythema infectiosum?

Expert answer:

O infectious erythema normally does not require a treatment specific. In general, the treatment includes rest and analgesic medications, antipyretics and antihistamines to relieve the symptoms.

The disease is usually mild and most patients, adults and children, recover without complications. Individuals with hemolytic problems, such as sickle cell anemia, or who have the weakened immune system due to HIV / AIDS or chemotherapy, for example, require special care.

Normally the child isolation with infectious erythema is not necessary, since the disease is transmitted before the onset of symptoms. However, the pediatrician accompanying the child should be consulted to determine whether or not a temporary removal from school or day care is required.

In general, most exanthematic diseases (chickenpox, rubella, measles) require temporary isolation and any child or adolescent with a rash should not go to school or day care until the doctor has made the diagnosis and the need for isolation.

There is no vaccine for infectious erythema. Handwashing and proper disposal of tissues used to clean the nose helps to prevent transmission of the disease. However, infectious erythema is so common in childhood that up to 15 years of age, about 50% of children are already immune because they have contracted the disease.

Follow-up and treatment of infectious erythema should preferably be done by a pediatrician (children) or dermatologist (adults).
