What is the treatment for folliculitis on the scalp?

Expert answer:

Treatment of folliculitis on the scalp can be done with hygiene and use of local or oral antibiotics, depending on its severity.

The most common folliculitis are superficial. In this case, the infection is located only in the region of hair exit (hairy ostium), and may have pus spots in the area, with redness around. Its cause is related to friction, such as the use of hats or caps, the use of ointments and creams for other problems of the scalp or due to lack of hygiene. Your treatment should be done initially with local cleaning and then use of antibiotic ointment. Some cases require an oral antibiotic.

Deep follicles on the scalp, such as decalvating and dissecting folliculitis, are caused by deep infections of the hair follicles, which may include blisters with pus, redness, crusting, raised scars (keloids), and areas with hair (alopecia). Its treatment should be carried out with local cleaning and use of specific antibiotics for the bacterium causing the infection, by means of culture of the secretion and bacteriological test (antibiogram).
