O reflux in babies most commonly due to immaturity of the upper gastrointestinal tract. Another possibility is that the baby has some difficulty of digestion, intolerance or allergy to some food of its feeding.
Gaps in small amounts after breastfeeding are often the symptoms of reflux. This is normal and can happen to all babies; however, when it happens several times, in large quantity and long after the feeding, it is necessary the evaluation by the pediatrician.
The symptoms of pathological reflux are:
- Restless sleep;
- Constant vomiting;
- Difficulty in suckling;
- Irritation and excessive crying, especially during breastfeeding;
- Weeping cry;
- Difficulty gaining weight;
- Frequent ear inflammation;
- Aspiration pneumonia: when milk enters the lung and causes pneumonia.
When gagging after feeding is frequent and the baby has difficulty gaining weight, or in the presence of the symptoms listed above, the doctor should be sought pediatrician.
