Pain in the nape of the neck, what can it be?

Expert answer:

Pain in the neck can have several causes, the most common of which are muscle tension and high pressure (arterial hypertension). It may also be a symptom of neurological disease, such as meningitis, but in this case, it usually appears accompanied by other signs and symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and fever.

Muscle tension results from several factors such as poor posture, muscle contraction due to stress or physical exertion. In this case, the pain can radiate to other regions of the body such as the head, shoulders and arms. Its treatment is based on correcting posture, performing appropriate physical exercises, reducing stress and using analgesics and muscle relaxants.

Another cause for neck pain is the sudden rise in blood pressure (systemic arterial hypertension). However, most people with high blood pressure do not have any symptoms because as pressure levels rise over time, the body tends to adapt to that situation, leading to changes in the functioning of various organs, but without causing pain or other complaints.

Hypertension has no cure but has treatment, which must be done without interruption and throughout life, in order to avoid cardiovascular and renal complications

Some measures for the treatment and control of arterial hypertension:

  • reduce the intake of salt and alcoholic beverages,
  • practice activities regular physical activities, 30 minutes daily, 5 days a week, with medical guidance,
