What is ulcerative colitis? Is there a cure?

Expert answer:

THE idiopathic ulcerative colitis (IUGR) is an inflammatory disease that affects the intestine. It has no definitive cure, except with surgery (removal of the large intestine), but it has effective treatment. Its symptoms are similar to those of other intestinal diseases. Although it is not yet known its cause, it is known that genetic and autoimmune factors are involved in its appearance.

The inflammation of IUGR is superficial and chronic, and predominantly affects the mucous layer of the colon. This disease may not only affect the rectum continuously, but also some sections close to the colon.

Main symptoms

Colic and diarrhea with blood and eventually with pus if there is infection. Dizziness seizures are persistent and occur at any time of the day or night. There is intense reflex to evacuate right after meals.

Diagnosis

Colonoscopy with biopsy. Certain blood tests may detect changes due to the disease (anemia and iron deficiency due to bleeding, decreased albumin, increased C-reactive protein, etc.).

Treatment

It aims to take the patient out of the crisis and keep him in remission. Pharmacological treatment usually acts quickly and efficiently in the acute form of the disease. In cases of toxic megacolon the prescription of antibiotics is essential.

I love it!

In case of persistent bouts of diarrhea (7 days or more) with or without bleeding, seek medical attention;

Avoid foods that contain insoluble fiber (fruit peels, vegetables, etc.), milk or spicy condiments so as not to stimulate the intestine and aggravate bouts of diarrhea. The same goes for fermented drinks.
